Trong live-action, Editor cắt từ hàng chục giờ footage thành 2 tiếng phim. Trong animation, Editor work khác hoàn toàn: bắt đầu từ animatic (storyboard có nhịp), thay thế từng panel bằng final animation khi production tiến triển, tinh chỉnh rhythm qua nhiều năm.
Khác với Editor live-action (cắt từ raw footage có sẵn) — Editor animation là cộng sự suốt cả production: animatic stage → rough animation → final shot, mỗi bước họ đều cut và refine.
Editor phim hoạt hình là người ráp animatic, rough animation, và final shot animation thành phim hoàn chỉnh. Họ quyết định: pacing (mỗi shot bao lâu), rhythm (cut quick action vs slow drama), transition (cut, dissolve, special transition), sound rough (temp music, voice, sfx cho animatic), continuity (cross-shot consistency). Output: animatic edit (early), rough cut với in-production animation (mid), final cut (delivery).
Khác với Editor phim live-action (cắt từ raw footage có sẵn — choose take, build scene) — Animation Editor work với limited material at each phase, edit early animatic before animation exist. Khác với Animatic Editor (focus only early storyboard reel) — Editor full lifecycle. Khác với Sound Editor (focus audio post) — Editor visual cut. Có sub-specialty: Feature Animation Editor (Pixar, Disney scale), TV Animation Editor (series episode), Short Animation Editor.

Editor animation báo cáo cho Director. Phối hợp chặt với: Head of Story (storyboard input), Animator (final shot delivery), Sound Designer / Composer (audio integration), VFX Supervisor (CG element), Editorial Assistant (manage media). Tham gia full lifecycle: pre-production (animatic from storyboard — 6 tháng-1 năm), production (continuous re-cut as animation come in — 1–3 năm), post (final cut + sound mix — 3–6 tháng). Một trong few người gần Director nhất xuyên suốt production.
Early phase: Editor build animatic từ storyboard panel. Each panel có duration tương ứng với planned shot. Add temp voice (scratch recording, hoặc audio reference từ live-action movie), temp music (placeholder score), temp sfx. Output: animatic reel — first version "playable" của phim. Director iterate story qua animatic — cut scene, add scene, reorder.

Production phase — animator deliver shot incrementally. Editor replace storyboard panel với rough animation (blocking pose, low quality), sau đó với refined animation, cuối cùng với final animation. Mỗi replacement có thể change pacing — shot có thể feel ngắn hơn / dài hơn so với animatic. Editor liên tục re-time, adjust.

Animation cho phép control rhythm tuyệt đối — không có spontaneous take như live-action. Editor decide: hold shot 5s extra để cảm xúc settle, cut quick để build energy, freeze frame for moment, slow-motion. Build emotional arc: rising action, climax, resolution. Work chặt với Director — many subtle decision discussed daily.

Final phase — replace final animation, integrate final voice (re-record sau picture lock), composer score, sound design (foley, ambient, sfx polished), final music mix. Picture lock: editorial freeze để sound team mix. Often có small adjustment last-minute (post-test screening). Final deliverable: master cut cho theatrical release.

Editorial skill #1 = rhythm. Sense về timing — hold 3 frame vs 5 frame có thể make/break scene. Animation editor đặc biệt phải feel music-like rhythm. Build qua: study film editing classic ("In the Blink of an Eye" — Walter Murch, bible cho editor); watch animation favorite frame-by-frame.
Editing là invisible art — done well, audience không notice; done bad, audience feel scene drag/rush.
Editor làm last rewrite của phim — quyết định scene nào keep, scene nào cut, order resequence. Phải sense story strong/weak point. Work close với Director defend cuts that improve story. Study Pixar "braintrust" process — story is endlessly refined.
Industry standard: Avid Media Composer (feature standard), Premiere Pro (smaller scale, common at indie + TV), Final Cut Pro (rare modern). Thêm: Pro Tools (audio integration), shot management (Shotgun, ftrack — track shot version qua thousands of asset). Master keyboard shortcut — speed multiplier.
Animation production có thousands of asset version. Editor + Editorial Assistant manage: bin structure, naming convention, version tracking, sync sound. Bad organization = lose hour daily. Build system early, maintain rigorously.
Editor là one of closest collaborator với Director — sit together daily for years. Phải build trust deep. Suggest alternate without ego, defend opinion politely, listen carefully. Best Editor-Director pair work multiple film (Thelma Schoonmaker + Scorsese 50 năm, Lee Smith + Christopher Nolan).
Feature animation 3–10 năm. Editor sống với same phim daily for years. Phải stay creative, fresh, opinionated suốt process. Tránh getting numb. Pace energy — không burn out giai đoạn pre-production rồi flatline cuối.

Path entry chính: Editorial Assistant (EA) tại animation studio — support Editor với media management, sync, asset version. 1–3 năm EA học inside Editorial Department. VN target: Sparx*, Glass Egg, Pixar Vietnam (nếu mở), VinGame; international: Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney, Cartoon Saloon.
Promote thành 1st AE — handle more responsibility, sometimes solo cut scene. Build trust với Editor + Director. 2–4 năm. Cross-train sound editing (helpful expand skill).
Lộ trình: Episode Editor TV animation series (Adventure Time, Avatar, BoJack Horseman) — own 1 episode end-to-end. Build credit. Eventually: Lead Editor / Feature Editor — solo feature. Sometimes alternate path: short film win festival, promoted to feature.
Path long-term: (1) Established Feature Editor — work với top Director repeatedly; (2) Editor + Co-Producer credit (some Editor go beyond cut); (3) Cross to Director — Editor experience valuable for directorial promotion; (4) Documentary animation editor niche.
