FX Artist trong animation = nửa simulator, nửa illustrator. Khác VFX cho live-action focus realism, animation FX có style — Disney có "Disney water", Ghibli có "Ghibli water", Spider-Verse có "Spider-Verse water" — distinguishable visual signature.
FX Artist hoạt hình (Họa sĩ hiệu ứng animation) là chuyên gia tạo effect cho phim/series animation. FX Artist join sau Animation phase, before Lighting + Compositing. Báo cáo cho FX Lead / VFX Supervisor / Animation Director. Receive: animated character, storyboard + animatic, style guide + reference. Output: FX element render layer (water, magic, dust). Phối hợp với: Animator (sync FX với character action), Lighter, Compositor, Director (art-direction approval). Feature animation = 800–2000 shot total; FX touch 30–60% shot. FX work span 12–24 tháng project.
Early phase: FX team work với Production Designer + Director develop FX style guide. Decision: water look gì (realistic vs stylized vs cel-shaded vs painterly)? Fire có flicker vs steady vs cartoon shape? Magic spell shape, color, glow? Build FX bible: example for each major FX. Concept frame + animation test (gif).

Per-shot work: 2D path — vẽ frame-by-frame (24 frame / second of action). Effect như water ripple = artist hand-draw mỗi frame. Final approve → render. 2D FX render as image sequence (PNG / EXR) với alpha. 3D FX render multi-pass (beauty, depth, motion vector). Color space: Rec.709 standard, ACES if film. Output → Compositor composite vào full frame với background + character + lighting.
Render + handoff
2D path require strong drawing + animation foundation. Read "Animator's Survival Kit" (Richard Williams), "Illusion of Life". Practice 12 principle of animation. Study FX legend: Joshua Beveridge (Disney), Hayao Miyazaki (Ghibli water/fire), FX work in Klaus. Draw thousand frame water.
3D path also need art foundation — không pure technical.
2D tool: TVPaint (industry standard 2D FX), Toon Boom Harmony, Photoshop animation, Procreate Dreams, Krita. 3D tool: Houdini (giống VFX), Maya (legacy nFluid, nCloth), Blender. After Effects cho composite preview. Master 1–2 primary tool.

Even stylized FX cần grounding in physics. Water flow direction, fire curl up (heat rise), smoke billow, gravity. Study real footage slow-mo + iconic art (Hokusai wave). Translate physics → stylized representation.
FX timing matter much. Water splash hit + recoil arc, fire flicker rhythm, magic spell anticipation-impact-followthrough. Read "Timing for Animation" (Whitaker & Halas). Practice exercise: animate ball drop, water drip, smoke rise — fundamental.
Build personal FX reference library: youtube slow-mo, FX showreel breakdown, classic animation FX. Curated collection: water, fire, smoke, magic, debris, dust. Tag organized. Studio: Sakuga blog, FX shorts on Vimeo, Schoolism FX class.
