Role này thường được gọi "entry-level" — nhưng chính là nơi học craft animation từ bên trong: hiểu spacing, timing, arc, follow-through. Nhiều legend animator (Glen Keane, Hayao Miyazaki) đều bắt đầu từ Inbetweener.
In-between Animator (Họa sĩ trung gian / Inbetweener / Tweener) là animator vẽ frame nằm giữa keyframe trong 2D animation. Quy trình truyền thống: Key Animator (Senior) vẽ key pose; Assistant Animator vẽ breakdown (frame quan trọng giữa key); Inbetweener vẽ remaining frame; Cleanup Artist trace final line; Painter fill color. Pencil test (line test) — flip frame quickly to see motion. Identify wobble (volume changing), pop (out-of-arc frame), flicker (frame not consistent). Re-draw problematic frame. Show tới Animator for approve. Common note: "spacing too even, need ease-in"; "frame 3 out of arc, fix"; "volume on hand changing between frame 2-4". Iterate.
Pencil test + review
Approved inbetween → Cleanup Artist (trace final line — clean, consistent weight). Inbetweener rough often slightly messy — cleanup phase polish. Inbetweener focus on motion math, cleanup focus on final line aesthetic. Some studio integrated (one artist do both); some specialized separately.
Hand-off Cleanup
Inbetweener output 30–80 frame/day. Speed important. Drawing fundamental: figure, proportion, line confidence. Practice life drawing weekly. Daily warm-up sketch. Read: "The Animator's Survival Kit" (Richard Williams) — bible.
Core skill. Hiểu: ease-in (slow start, accelerate), ease-out (fast start, decelerate), even spacing (constant speed), arc (curved path). Practice exercise from Williams book — ball bouncing, pendulum, walk cycle. Internalize through 1000+ exercise.
Character must maintain volume across frame — head not shrink, body not stretch unexpectedly. Construction-based thinking: imagine character as 3D form (sphere + cylinder + box), maintain solidity. Read: "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing" (Mike Mattesi).
Inbetween work repetitive, often tedious. Same character pose variation thousand time. Patience essential. Mental endurance for 8 hour drawing. Many drop out — those who persist become great animator over decade.
Modern industry: Toon Boom Harmony (Disney + most TV use), TVPaint (frame-by-frame focus), Clip Studio Paint EX (anime quy trình), Procreate Dreams (iPad). Traditional: lightbox + animation paper + pencil — still used at Ghibli, some Disney throwback. Hardware: Wacom Cintiq tablet.
