Studio kiến trúc nhận được 1 dự án villa, 1 hotel resort, 1 cao ốc văn phòng cùng lúc. Mỗi dự án có Kiến trúc sư lead riêng, có deadline riêng, client demand riêng. Người coordinate tất cả — đảm bảo studio không vỡ trận — là Design Manager.
Khác với Kiến trúc sư trưởng (focus thiết kế của 1 dự án) — Design Manager focus quản lý multi-project, team, timeline, client. Họ là backbone vận hành của studio kiến trúc.
Design Manager kiến trúc là người quản lý vận hành team thiết kế trong studio kiến trúc. Họ coordinate: phân bổ resource (ai làm dự án nào, theo tải nào), quản lý timeline (deadline giao bản vẽ, milestone phối hợp), communicate với client (meeting, presentation, change request), quality control (đảm bảo bản vẽ chuẩn studio standard). Trong studio nhỏ — kiêm cả vai role thiết kế. Trong studio lớn — focus pure management.

Design Manager kiến trúc — coordinate team, timeline, client
Design Manager ở operational layer của studio kiến trúc. Báo cáo cho Studio Director / Principal. Lead team: Project Architect (lead dự án), Kiến trúc sư, Drafter, 3D Visualizer. Phối hợp với Engineer consultant (MEP, structural), Interior Designer, Contractor, Client. Tham gia full lifecycle: concept → schematic → DD (design development) → CD (construction document) → CA (construction administration). Project span 6 tháng (villa) đến 3–5 năm (cao ốc/hotel).
Khi studio win contract dự án mới — Design Manager plan: phân chia phase, milestone, deliverable, deadline. Assign team: lead architect, support team, drafter, visualizer. Balance load — không để team nào burn-out hoặc idle. Update plan weekly trong studio meeting.
Project planning & resource allocation
Design Manager là face of studio với client. Lead meeting: kick-off, schematic review, DD review, CD sign-off. Prepare presentation deck — option design, model 3D, animation walkthrough. Handle change request diplomatically — đôi khi nói "no" với client để bảo vệ design integrity, đôi khi accommodate để giữ relationship.

Trước khi giao deliverable cho client hoặc contractor — Design Manager review: bản vẽ chính xác không, model coordinate với engineer consultant (MEP, structural) không, spec đúng material yêu cầu không. Lead internal design review weekly với team. Catch error sớm — sau khi giao thì cost cao gấp 10–100 lần.
Quality control & internal design review
Design Manager cũng là people leader: 1:1 với senior architect, career development, hiring junior. Đồng thời operations: standard template, software license, library asset, file naming convention. Build studio culture: design crit ritual, knowledge sharing, social event.
Team mentoring & studio operation
Manage multi-project simultaneously đòi hỏi process. Công cụ: Gantt chart (MS Project, Asana), milestone tracker, status report weekly. Học PMI methodology (PMP certification valuable cho big firm), Agile cho design lần lặp. Practice via project nhỏ trước.
Architecture project khác software — timeline rigid hơn vì construction depend. Hiểu critical path là kỹ năng cốt lõi.
Design Manager không thiết kế hằng ngày nhưng phải hiểu deeply: design principle, construction detail, MEP coordination, code regulation, material spec. Để guide team decision và defend với client. Path tới Design Manager hầu hết qua Project Architect.
Client kiến trúc là demanding stakeholder — developer, owner, investor. Communication phải: clear (không jargon kỹ thuật), confident (defend design), diplomatic (handle pushback). Read "Never Split the Difference" (Voss), practice in lower-stake meeting trước.
Architecture project là multi-discipline: kiến trúc + structural + MEP + landscape + interior. Mỗi discipline có constraint riêng. Design Manager phải nghĩ system: change này tác động consultant nào, timeline impact ra sao. BIM thinking giúp ích nhiều.
Master: Revit (BIM standard mới), AutoCAD (vẫn dùng nhiều), SketchUp (quick model). Thêm: Navisworks (clash detection), Rhino (parametric), BIM 360 (collaboration). Không cần lead bản vẽ tay nhưng phải biết review file.
Project luôn có unknown — supplier bể, regulator thay đổi code, client request thay đổi. Design Manager phải decide quick với incomplete info, accept risk, move forward. Develop bias for action — perfection paralyzes.
VN: ĐH Kiến trúc Hà Nội, ĐH Kiến trúc TP.HCM, ĐH Xây dựng (Kiến trúc), Văn Lang. Sau đó thi Chứng chỉ hành nghề Kiến trúc sư (KTS hạng II / hạng I). Quốc tế: AA School (London), Cooper Union (NYC), MIT, ETH Zürich.

Lead project lớn hơn (hotel, commercial mid-rise). Mentor junior. Sit in client meeting senior level. Start to handle multiple parallel project. PMP certification ở stage này valuable.
