Khi Marvel Studios make Avengers: Endgame budget $400M, có một người ký final greenlight: Kevin Feige — Executive Producer. Khi A24 indie production gọi Spielberg là EP, không có nghĩa Spielberg shoot daily — mà ông back project, lend name, occasionally weigh in big decision. Executive Producer là role lượng quyền lực cao nhưng hằng ngày involvement biến đổi rất nhiều.
Khác với Producer (hands-on toàn bộ production) — Executive Producer focus raise tiền, big decision, sign-off final. Họ ít involve daily nhưng có ultimate authority.
Executive Producer (EP) là người financing/leadership cao nhất trên phim. Role này có 3 variant: (1) Studio EP — exec tại studio (Marvel's Kevin Feige, Pixar's CCO), oversee multi-project; (2) Financier EP — person/company put money in, get credit + back-end (often không creative involvement); (3) Talent EP credit — star/director given EP credit as deal sweetener (Brad Pitt EP nhiều phim mà ông không produce thực). Trong VN industry: EP thường = người raise money + executive oversight.
Khác với Producer (hands-on hằng ngày production — hire crew, budget, schedule, set logistics) — EP focus tier above. Khác với Line Producer (focus budget execution) — EP focus business strategy. Khác với Showrunner (TV — combine writer/EP, very hands-on) — Film EP rộng hơn nhưng less daily. Có sub-specialty: Studio EP, Independent EP, TV Showrunner-EP, Documentary EP.
Executive Producer — top financing + leadership role
EP ở top of production hierarchy. Báo cáo cho Studio CEO / Board / Investor. Oversee Producer (who run hằng ngày), Director (creative). Phối hợp với Financier, Studio exec, Distributor, Sales agent, Talent agent. Tham gia: development (raise money — 6 tháng-2 năm trước shoot), production (oversight, big decision), post (final sign-off + marketing), release (campaign approval). Multiple parallel project — EP thường có 3–10 project active simultaneously.
EP raise tiền cho project. Source: studio finance (negotiate với studio greenlight committee), private investor, government fund (VN: Quỹ hỗ trợ phát triển điện ảnh; Korea: KOFIC; France: CNC), international co-production, pre-sale (sell territory right trước shoot), tax credit (UK, Canada, Georgia film tax credit). Manage expectation: budget overrun, schedule slip, creative pivot. Defend project khi exec push back. Long-term relationship building — investor invest trong người, không project. Sau picture lock — EP involve marketing + chiến lược phát hành. Sign-off poster, trailer, release date. Negotiate với distributor, oversee festival submission (Cannes, Berlin, Toronto), manage award campaign (Oscar push for serious contender — multi-million dollar campaign). For studio film: coordinate với marketing team.

EP business is network. Build relationship qua decade: financier (private equity, family office, hedge fund), talent agent (CAA, WME, UTA), studio exec, festival programmer, distribution exec. Attend industry event: Cannes Marché du Film, AFM, Sundance, EFM Berlin. VN: Liên hoan Phim VN, HANIFF, regional event.
EP make big strategic bet: which project greenlight, when release, how distribute. Long-term thinking — career build qua decade of choice. Risk tolerance high but calibrated. Study top EP track record: Kevin Feige (Marvel), Megan Ellison (Annapurna), Ted Sarandos (Netflix), Bùi Thạc Chuyên (VN).
EP pick project — picking is hardest skill. Develop taste qua: watch thousand film, study which become hit / classic / failure, identify pattern. Best EP có distinctive taste (Megan Ellison's experimental film, Plan B's mid-budget original).
EP must understand: vòng liên hoan, distribution window, marketing economic, streaming economic shift, international market. Industry change rapidly — streaming era đã transform model. Read trade daily (Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Screen Daily, BoF for fashion crossover).

Lộ trình khởi đầu: Assistant to Producer / Studio Executive. Read script, take note, manage calendar, learn deal terminology. 2–4 năm assistant trước promote. VN: assistant tại Galaxy Studio, BHD, Mega GS, Saigon Film. Hollywood: assistant tại WME, CAA, A24, Plan B, Studio.
Promote thành Production Coordinator / Junior Producer. Work on actual production — learn budget, schedule, on-set issue. 3–5 năm — work on 5–10 project (short, feature, TV). Build credit.
Step up thành Producer. Own project: develop script, attach talent, raise budget, produce, deliver. Indie low-budget first ($500K-2M), build track record. 1–3 successful Producer credit before EP role.
