Phân loại theo product type: (1) E-commerce IA — Amazon, Tiki, Shopee — product hierarchy + faceted search; (2) Content site IA — Wikipedia, news site, blog — taxonomy + tag; (3) SaaS / Enterprise IA — Salesforce, Slack, Notion — feature navigation + permission structure; (4) Mobile App IA — bottom tab, drawer, modal hierarchy; (5) Intranet / Knowledge base IA — internal company tool. Senior IA often work cross multiple product type.
Khác với UX Designer general (flow, interaction, research) — IA focus structure specifically. Khác với UI Designer (visual layer) — IA structural layer beneath. Khác với Content Strategist (what content) — IA how content organize. Khác với Data Architect (database structure) — IA user-facing structure. Hợp tác chặt với: UX Designer, UX Researcher, Content Strategist, Product Manager, Engineer, SEO Specialist.
Information Architect — foundation invisible của UX
IA work early trong project — define structure trước UI design begin. Báo cáo cho UX Director / Head of Design / Product Lead. Phối hợp với UX Researcher (insight → IA), UX Designer (IA → wireframe), Content team, Engineer (URL structure + database fit). Quy trình: discovery + research (2–4 tuần) → IA draft (2–4 tuần) → user test (1–2 tuần) → iterate → handoff. Project: small redesign (4–8 tuần), full IA overhaul (3–9 tháng), enterprise IA (1–2 năm).
For redesign: content audit — inventory existing content (URL, page, file). Hundreds-thousands page. Categorize, identify duplicate, dead content. User research — talk user, observe behavior, analyze analytic (search query, navigation path, drop-off). Identify mental model: how user expect content organized?
Audit + research
Build taxonomy — hierarchical categorization. Choose label wisely: clear, no jargon, match user mental model. Decide polyhierarchy (content fit multiple category) vs single hierarchy. Build controlled vocabulary for tag. Avoid label problem: ambiguous ("Resources"), overlapping ("News" vs "Articles" vs "Updates"), inconsistent capitalization.

Card sort research
Build sitemap: visual map of all page + relationship. Design navigation system: global nav (top bar — major section), local nav (sub-section), utility nav (login, search, language), breadcrumb. For mobile: bottom tab vs drawer vs hub-and-spoke. Cross-link strategy: related content, "you might also like".
Sitemap + nav
Validate với user: card sort (user group cards into category — informs taxonomy), tree test (user find item in proposed taxonomy — measure findability), first-click test (where do user click first to accomplish task?). Công cụ: Optimal Workshop, UserTesting. Iterate. Handoff sitemap + IA documentation tới UX Designer for wireframe phase.
Test + iterate
Cốt lõi. Think in hierarchy, relationship, taxonomy. Comfortable với abstract structure. Library science background bonus. Read: "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web" (Rosenfeld & Morville) — bible; "How to Make Sense of Any Mess" (Abby Covert).
Library science fundamental: cataloging, controlled vocabulary, thesaurus, faceted classification. Study: Dewey Decimal System, Library of Congress Classification. Modern app: SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System), schema.org. Read: "The Accidental Taxonomist" (Heather Hedden).
IA decision must ground user reality, not assumption. Comfort interview + observe. Run card sort + tree test session. Analyze qualitative data. Combine với analytic quantitative. Read: "Just Enough Research" (Erika Hall).
IA tool: Optimal Workshop (card sort + tree test + first-click), UsabilityHub, UserTesting. Diagram: Figma + FigJam, Lucidchart, OmniGraffle (Mac classic), Whimsical. Spreadsheet: Excel/Google Sheets for content inventory.
IA output = diagram + documentation. Must communicate clearly across stakeholder (designer, engineer, content, exec). Sitemap readable. Persuasive writing in spec. Present clearly in meeting.
IA exist trong UX context. Hiểu broader UX (user journey, persona, jobs-to-be-done). Hiểu product side (business goal, feature trade-off, technical constraint). Bridge role.
Background phù hợp: UX/HCI, Library & Information Science, Cognitive Science, Anthropology. VN: RMIT Digital Design, FPT University Multimedia. Quốc tế: CMU HCI, UC Berkeley iSchool, UMich School of Information, Pratt Information Experience Design. Thêm: relevant book (Rosenfeld & Morville, Abby Covert).
Most IA start as UX/UI Designer. Specialize qua year. Volunteer for IA work on project — content audit, sitemap, taxonomy. Take IA-specific course (Nielsen Norman Group certification).
3–5 năm experience — formal IA role. VN: large e-commerce + tech (Tiki, Shopee, Lazada, VNG, Zalo) — have IA team. Quốc tế: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce. Tasks: smaller portion of larger IA work.
5–8 năm — Senior. Lead full IA project. Define methodology. Mentor junior. Present to exec.
8–12 năm — Principal IA / IA Lead. Cross-product IA strategy. Influence engineering decision (database, URL structure). Industry expert.
