Matchmove Artist tracking chuyển động camera + object trong live footage, để CGI element add later khớp perfectly với plate. Là role technical foundation của VFX pipeline — không có matchmove, không có CGI integration.
Khi T-Rex Jurassic Park bước qua jeep, khi Iron Man fly qua phố downtown camera handheld swooping, khi Spider-Man swing through New York từ POV — CGI nhân vật phải chuyển động khớp 100% với camera move của real footage. Đây là phép màu của Matchmove.
Matchmove Artist là technical foundation invisible của VFX quy trình — không có matchmove tốt, CGI integration không thể tốt. Họ "map" camera movement của live footage thành virtual 3D camera trong CGI software, để lighting / animation / FX work khớp với plate perfectly.
01Matchmove Artist là ai?
Matchmove Artist (còn gọi Camera Tracker) là chuyên gia tracking chuyển động camera + object trong live footage. Phân loại theo task: (1) Camera matchmover — track camera movement (most common); (2) Object matchmover — track moving object trong plate (vehicle, prop); (3) Body/face matchmover — track actor body + face for digital double; (4) Set survey artist — capture 3D geometry of physical set for CG integration. Specialization: handheld shot (challenging — irregular movement), vehicle mount (smooth but fast), aerial (drone, helicopter), greenscreen (tracking marker reliant).
Khác với Layout Artist (set up scene camera trong full CGI animation) — Matchmove track real footage camera. Khác với Compositor (combine image) — Matchmove give 3D camera data. Matchmove Artist — technical foundation invisible của VFX
Matchmove Artist work early in VFX quy trình, immediately after plate received. Báo cáo Matchmove Lead / VFX Supervisor. Phối hợp với Layout Artist, Animator, Lighting Artist, Compositor. Quy trình: receive plate + on-set data (LIDAR, measurement, HDRI) → analyze plate → solve tracking → reference geometry build → validate → handoff. Quota: 3-8 shot/tuần tùy complexity. 1. Receive plate + analyze
Receive live plate footage. Review: camera type (lens info, sensor size — affect FOV calculation), movement (lock-off / pan-tilt / dolly / handheld / drone), tracking marker on set (green dot, X tape — if available), scene feature (corner, edge để tracking). Receive on-set data: LIDAR scan, set survey, HDRI, lens distortion grid. Plan tracking approach: 2D motion track? 3D camera solve? Object track?

2. Solve camera tracking
Use tracking software (PFTrack, SynthEyes, 3DEqualizer, Mocha, Blender). Auto-track first — software identify feature point + solve camera. Often messy. Manual refine: add tracking marker manually, remove bad point, define survey point (known measurement). Iterate. Goal: clean solve — error pixel < 0.5 (sub-pixel accuracy). 3. Build reference geometry
Build scene reference geometry trong 3D scene — rough mesh of environment (floor, wall, building) để downstream department có reference. Cho set extension shot: blue box + measurement → CG environment match perspective. Cho character integration: rough body proxy of actor for animator reference. Export to Maya + Houdini scene with proper coordinate system.

4. Submit + revise + handoff downstream
Submit 3D camera + scene file để Matchmove Lead + Supervisor review. They check: track lock perfectly throughout? Reference geometry accurate? Any drift? Address note. Once approved: handoff to downstream — Layout Artist (use for shot setup), Animator (character animation in scene), Lighting Artist (light scene), FX (effects in space), Compositor (final integration). 03Matchmove Artist cần giỏi gì?
Geometry + 3D spatial sense
Foundation. Strong 3D spatial visualization. Master perspective. Understand: parallax, vanishing point, camera focal length impact. Daily practice: study real footage, identify camera move. Comfort manipulate 3D scene mentally.
Camera + photography understanding
Understand camera: focal length (mm to FOV), sensor size, shutter (motion blur for tracking), lens distortion. Photography helpful background. Camera operator knowledge bonus.

Patience + meticulous detail
Matchmove = often tedious. Hunt down 1 bad point causing track drift over 200 frame. Iterate manually. Detail-oriented personality fit. Sub-pixel accuracy required — pixel-perfect work.
Math + technical (light)
Basic math: trigonometry, vector, matrix. Not need PhD. Understand error metric (RMS error). Lens distortion math. Survey measurement.

Downstream depend on your track. Communicate clear about quality + limitation. Document scene file properly. Maintain naming convention.
