Webtoon Hàn Quốc tạo cú huých — comic không còn black-white truyền thống mà full color trở thành chuẩn mới. Người biến line art của Penciler/Inker thành panel sống động với mood, lighting, atmosphere là Colorist truyện tranh. Họ là họa sĩ cuối cùng cầm cọ trên page trước khi chapter publish.
Colorist comic khác Colorist animation ở chỗ mỗi panel là 1 tác phẩm độc lập. Không có motion, không có frame-to-frame consistency — chỉ có 1 image phải đứng vững, đủ mạnh để giữ reader scroll xuống panel tiếp theo.
01Colorist truyện tranh là ai?
Colorist trong truyện tranh là người tô màu cho line art của Penciler/Inker sau khi line đã hoàn thiện. Họ sử dụng Clip Studio Paint (industry standard cho webtoon Hàn), Photoshop, hoặc Procreate để paint flat color, sau đó add shadow, highlight, lighting effect, atmosphere. Output: colored page ready cho lettering và publishing.
Khác với Color Designer hoạt hình (define palette cho cả phim) — Colorist comic vừa design color cho mỗi page vừa thực thi. Khác với Colorist 2D animation (fill flat color theo palette) — Colorist comic painter, render full lighting/shadow/atmosphere. Khác với Background Painter — Colorist comic làm cả character + background, panel-by-panel. Trong manga truyền thống, comic B&W không có Colorist (chỉ tone screen tone artist); nhưng manga modern + webtoon đều cần Colorist.

Vị trí trong quy trình sản xuất
Colorist comic work sau Inker và trước Letterer. Trong quy trình indie/freelance, Colorist có thể là independent contractor — Writer hire trực tiếp. Trong webtoon studio Hàn (Naver, Kakao), Colorist thuộc art team dưới Art Director. Trong Marvel/DC, Colorist là vai trò chính thức trong creative team (Penciler, Inker, Colorist, Letterer). 02Công việc của một Colorist truyện tranh
1. Receive page và analyze mood
Bước đầu — receive inked page (TIFF/PSD high-res) từ Inker. Read script và story cho page này: scene location, time of day, emotional mood, action intensity. Họp với Writer/Editor nếu unclear. Setup file trong Clip Studio Paint hoặc Photoshop: separate layer cho line art, base color, shadow, highlight, effect.

2. Flat color cho character & background
Bước đầu coloring — flat color cho character (skin, hair, costume) và background. Sử dụng character color sheet (nếu series có) hoặc tự design color cho character debut. Nền tảng: phân biệt foreground/midground/background bằng color saturation differing. Tốc độ: 30–60 phút per panel flat depending complexity.

3. Shadow, highlight và lighting
Phần render — add shadow theo light direction trong scene. Multiple style: hard cell-shading (anime style), soft shading (painterly), blended (semi-realistic). Add highlight trên hair, fabric, glossy surface. Apply color theory: shadow side cooler/darker, light side warmer/brighter. Đây là phase quan trọng nhất — biến flat thành 3D illusion.

Tốc độ với deadline weekly
Webtoon publish weekly — phải color 50–80 panel/tuần. Tốc độ critical. Build personal brush set, color palette template, layer preset. Junior: 5–10 panel/ngày; Senior: 10–20 panel/ngày complex render. Hotkey quy trình là key.
Hiểu thể loại comic/webtoon
Mỗi thể loại có convention color khác: Romance webtoon — soft pastel, warm; Action webtoon — saturated, contrast cao; Horror — desaturated, cool, sometimes monochromatic. Đọc 50–100 series khác nhau, study color convention mỗi thể loại.
