Lighting Artist thiết kế + setup ánh sáng cho 3D scene trong animation và VFX — mimic real-world light hoặc stylized cinematic light. Là role nghệ thuật-kỹ thuật quyết định mood, atmosphere, và visual quality của final image.
Khi golden hour ánh chiều trải qua Pandora forest trong Avatar, candlelight ấm tạo intimate moment trong "Beauty and the Beast", neon cyberpunk lung linh trong "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" — đó là tác phẩm của Lighting Artist.
Lighting Artist là cinematographer ảo của 3D world — họ thiết kế ánh sáng cho scene digital, mimic real-world physics hoặc stylized cinematic. Là role nghệ thuật-kỹ thuật hybrid — quyết định mood, atmosphere, focus, depth, time-of-day của shot. Lighting có thể biến scene flat thành "breathtaking".
01Lighting Artist là ai?
Lighting Artist là chuyên gia thiết kế + setup ánh sáng cho 3D scene trong animation và VFX. Phân loại theo quy trình: (1) Animation feature Lighting — Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney — stylized + photoreal hybrid; (2) VFX Lighting — match CGI vào live action plate (need photoreal precision); (3) Game cinematic Lighting — pre-rendered cutscene; (4) Real-time / Game Lighting — Unreal, Unity — performance-aware, dynamic; (5) Virtual production Lighting — LED stage (Mandalorian, Loki) — hybrid real + virtual. Specialization: character lighting (face, skin shader), environment lighting (large scene, sky), creature lighting (fur, exotic skin).

Lighting Artist — cinematographer ảo của 3D world
Lighting Artist work sau Layout + Lookdev, đồng thời với FX, trước Compositing. Báo cáo Lighting Supervisor / Lookdev Sup / VFX Sup. Phối hợp với Lookdev Artist (material work properly under light), FX (volumetric + atmospheric), Compositor (pass requirement). Quy trình: receive layout scene → setup light → test render → submit dailies → revise → final render → handoff comp. Quota: 2-5 shot/tuần tùy complexity. Project: feature film (1.5-3 năm với lighting 6-12 tháng), VFX TV (per episode 2-6 tuần).
02Công việc của một Lighting Artist
1. Study reference + plan light
Receive scene (layout + animation + asset lookdev'd) + look reference (concept art, mood board, supervisor approval shot). Study light intent: time-of-day, weather, mood, key light direction. Reference real photography. Plan light schema: key, fill, rim, ambient, practical (light source in scene itself).

2. Setup 3D light + test
Open scene trong Maya / Katana / Houdini / Blender. Add light type: directional (sun), point (lightbulb), spot (focused beam), area (window soft light), environment / HDRI (ambient sky). Adjust position, intensity, color temperature. Set up shadow (raytraced, soft area). Add volumetric if applicable (light beam through fog). Test render small section IPR (interactive preview).

3. Refine + submit dailies

4. Final render + AOV + handoff comp
After approval: render final hi-res với multiple AOV (Arbitrary Output Variable) pass — beauty, diffuse, specular, depth, normal, world position, ambient occlusion, motion vector, ID matte. AOV cho compositor flexibility. Send to render farm. Manage render time + cost. Handoff to compositor với metadata + note about light setup.

03Lighting Artist cần giỏi gì?
Color + light theory
Foundation. Hiểu color temperature (Kelvin — 3200K warm tungsten, 5600K daylight, 10000K blue sky), color theory (complementary, analogous, harmony), color psychology. Light behavior (inverse square law, falloff, bounce, GI). Read: "Color and Light" (James Gurney) — bible for any visual artist.
Cinematography + photography
Study film lighting masters (Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Bradford Young). Study photography (Gregory Crewdson, Annie Leibovitz). Hiểu 3-point lighting, Rembrandt, butterfly, split lighting. Reference film constantly. Watch behind-the-scenes interview.
