01Hospitality Designer là ai?
Hospitality Designer (Nhà thiết kế khách sạn & nhà hàng) là chuyên gia thiết kế interior + experience cho không gian phục vụ. Phân loại theo property type: (1) Hotel — boutique 50–150 room, mid-scale 150–300, luxury 100–500, mega-resort 500–2000 key; (2) Restaurant — fine dining, casual, fast-casual, café, food hall; (3) Bar / Club / Cocktail lounge; (4) Spa / Wellness; (5) Resort / Villa; (6) Hostel / Capsule hotel. Phân loại theo brand: (1) Branded chain (Marriott, Hyatt, Accor, IHG) — brand standard strict; (2) Independent boutique — creative freedom; (3) Lifestyle brand (Soho House, Standard, Ace).

Hospitality Designer — thiết kế experience đầy đủ
Hospitality project quy trình long — 18–60 tháng full cycle. Phase: Concept Design (4–8 tuần) → Schematic Design (8–12 tuần) → Design Development (12–20 tuần) → Construction Document (12–20 tuần) → Tender + Construction (10–24 tháng) → FF&E + Install (3–6 tháng) → Opening. Báo cáo cho Owner / Developer / Hotel Brand. Team: Lead Designer (HoD level) + Project Designer 2–5 + FF&E + drafter. Project value: $5M (small boutique) → $50M+ (mega resort).
02Công việc của một Hospitality Designer
1. Brand & concept development
Hospitality project = brand. Define brand DNA: target guest persona, positioning ("Indochinese romance", "Japanese minimalist wellness", "Tropical surf cool"), unique selling proposition. Develop narrative: each space tell story chapter. Build concept book: mood, sketch, reference, key idea. Present tới Owner — may iterate 5–15 round.

2. Spatial design & guest journey
Plan floor plan theo guest journey: arrival → lobby → check-in → vertical (elevator) → corridor → room. Each touchpoint design intentional. For hotel: room type (standard, deluxe, suite) plan + furniture layout. For restaurant: FOH (front of house — dining) vs BOH (back of house — kitchen, storage), table spacing (intimacy vs capacity). Comply code (fire, ADA accessibility, building local), brand standard (Marriott Brand Standards = book +1000 page).

3. Material, finish, FF&E selection
Develop material palette: floor (stone, wood, tile, carpet), wall (paint, panel, wallpaper, fabric), ceiling (gyp, exposed beam, fabric). Specify finish: matte vs glossy, hand-feel. Coordinate FF&E (furniture, fixtures, equipment) — work với FF&E Designer. Pick lighting fixture, art piece, accessory. Material need durable (commercial wear), cleanable, brand-fit, budget-fit. Travel showroom: Milan Salone, ICFF, Maison&Objet.

4. Construction supervision + opening
Construction phase: visit site weekly/bi-weekly. Quality check finish install (millwork joint align, paint texture, stone seam). Resolve issue tức thời với contractor. FF&E install phase (last 2–4 tháng): supervise furniture placement, art hang, plant install, accessory styling. Pre-opening walk-through với Owner + Operator. Punch list fix. Opening — soft launch testing, then grand opening.

03Hospitality Designer cần giỏi gì?
Interior + spatial design
Foundation. Hiểu: space planning, scale, proportion, circulation, material, color theory, lighting design. Visit great hotel/restaurant — sketch, photo, analyze layout + finish choice. Read: "Hotel Design, Planning and Development" (Penner), "Restaurant Design" (Roberto Beretta).
Hospitality operation literacy
Hospitality design only success when work for operation. Hiểu: housekeeping flow (room turnover speed), F&B kitchen (line cook station), front desk (check-in efficiency), bar (bartender movement). Talk hotel manager + chef + bartender. Some design course visit running hotel for shadow program.
AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp
Industry standard: AutoCAD (2D drawing), Revit (BIM — large project), Rhino / SketchUp (3D modeling), V-Ray / Enscape / Lumion (rendering), Adobe InDesign + Photoshop (presentation). For luxury: hand sketch + watercolor presentation still valued.
Brand + storytelling

Client + vendor management
Stakeholder complex: Owner (rich, opinionated, time-poor), Hotel Brand exec (standard enforce), Architect (design tension), Contractor (cost concern), FF&E vendor (lead time stress). Negotiate diplomatically. Document decision rigorously.
Detail + project management
Project 18–60 tháng. Hundreds material spec, thousand FF&E item, multiple consultant. Detail obsessive. Project management tool: Asana / Monday / Procore. Document control. Construction document accurate.
04Làm cách nào để trở thành Hospitality Designer?
Background phù hợp: Thiết kế Nội thất, Kiến trúc. VN: ĐH Kiến trúc Hà Nội/HCM, ĐH Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp, RMIT Interior Design. Quốc tế: Pratt Institute, Parsons, NYSID New York School of Interior Design, RCA London, Cornell Hotel School (rare hospitality-specific degree), Glion + Les Roches (hospitality school có design focus).
Apply firm chuyên hospitality. International firm in VN: HBA Hirsch Bedner Associates, Wilson Associates, Wimberly Interiors, BLINK Design, AvroKO, Yabu Pushelberg. VN firm: NU Studio, VTN Architects, HMA Architects, Mia Design Studio. Tasks: draft, material research, sample chase.
2–4 năm — own portion of project: spa, restaurant, club lounge, room mockup. Travel showroom. Develop hospitality-specific knowledge.
5–8 năm — own full project (small boutique, restaurant). Lead client meeting. Coordinate consultant team. Build portfolio 5–10 project.
