Mỗi phim Việt Nam blockbuster hiện đại đều có vài chục đến vài trăm VFX shot — flying drone replace, building set extension, sky replace, wire/rig removal. Người tích hợp những element CG này vào footage live action là Compositor phim. Họ làm cho audience không nhận ra đâu là CG, đâu là thật.

01Compositor phim là ai?
Compositor phim là người tích hợp nhiều layer hình ảnh thành 1 frame final cho phim — feature, TVC, MV, series, documentary. Họ làm việc với live plate, CG element, matte painting, title/text, effect element (fire, smoke, magic). Phần mềm chính: Nuke (feature film professional), After Effects (TVC, MV, motion graphic), Fusion (built-in DaVinci Resolve, growing).
Khác với VFX Compositor (chuyên cinema-grade integration cho feature film VFX-heavy) — Compositor phim work với scope rộng hơn, multiple format. Khác với Editor (cắt và sắp xếp shot) — Compositor work trên single shot integration. Khác với Motion Designer (motion graphic, 2D animation) — Compositor focus realistic integration. Có overlap đáng kể, nhiều artist work cross-discipline.

Compositor phim thuộc post-production team, work sau Editor (picture lock) và song song với VFX team (nếu có CG production). Báo cáo cho VFX Supervisor hoặc Post-production Supervisor. Phối hợp với Online Editor, Colorist, Sound Designer. Bàn giao composited shot back cho Editor để conform vào timeline, sau đó cho Colorist grade. Studio: VN post-production house (Yeah1, BHD Post, ABC Post, Sound & Vision); production company in-house (Galaxy, CJ HK Entertainment); international remote.
02Công việc của một Compositor phim
1. Receive shot yêu cầu và analyze footage
Bước đầu — receive shot yêu cầu từ Director/VFX Supervisor: shot này cần gì (sky replace, add CG element, remove wire)? Receive footage (cinema RAW hoặc ProRes), CG element (nếu có), reference. Analyze plate: lighting, color, camera move, lens distortion, grain. Setup project trong Nuke hoặc After Effects.

2. Keying, roto và clean plate
Pre-processing — chroma key (green/blue screen), rotoscoping object không có chroma key, clean plate (remove tracking marker, wire, microphone visible). Đối với TVC/MV thường có ít chroma work; cho phim feature có nhiều. Master roto skill — frame-by-frame mask manual, key skill cho entry-level compositor.

3. Integration và effect
Phần chính — tích hợp element. Sky replacement: replace overcast sky với clear sky (TVC common); set extension: extend physical set với matte painting hoặc 3D environment; add CG element: car drive trên road, building thêm, character thêm; wire/rig removal: paint over wire stunt; title/graphic: add text, infographic. Match plate color, light, motion, grain.

4. Final QC và delivery
Bước cuối — add cinematic touch: motion blur match camera move, depth of field match lens, lens flare/glow, grain match. Final QC: play shot ở tức thời, check artifact (matte edge, grain mismatch, color jump). Submit cho VFX Supervisor, accept góp ý, iterate. Render final output (EXR cho feature, ProRes cho TVC/MV) bàn giao cho Online Editor conform.

03Compositor phim cần giỏi gì?
Nuke / After Effects chuyên sâu
2 phần mềm chính. Nuke (node-based, cinema standard, phim feature) — master node graph, keying, color, 3D system. After Effects (layer-based, fast quy trình, TVC/MV/motion graphic) — master mask, expression, effect plugin (Trapcode, Red Giant). Choose tùy career direction: feature film → Nuke priority; commercial/MV → AE priority.
Color management
Hiểu Rec.709, ACES, log color (S-Log3, ARRI Log-C). Compositor work với linear color (not sRGB display). LUT application và color space conversion. Học từ Foundry Nuke color management tutorial, ACES central documentation.
Cinematography knowledge
Phải match plate optical — hiểu lens (focal length, T-stop, DOF, distortion), film grain, motion blur shape. Watch cinematography work, take note. Reference: The Five C's of Cinematography của Mascelli, Cinematography Theory and Practice của Brown.
Mắt nhìn nghệ thuật & eye for realism
VFX successful = invisible. Phải spot khi shot "stick out" — matte edge sharp, color off, grain mismatch. Develop eye qua xem hàng nghìn VFX shot. Watch Corridor Crew VFX Reaction on YouTube — họ deconstruct good/bad VFX.
Tốc độ deadline tight
TVC và MV có deadline rất tight — sometimes 2–3 ngày từ yêu cầu đến delivery. Phải fast và efficient. Build personal template, gizmo library, automation script. Senior Compositor có thể turnaround 1 shot complex trong nửa ngày.
Cộng tác với Director/VFX Sup
Director có vision creative — Compositor phải translate thành execution technical. Phải communicate intelligent: hiểu khi Director nói "tôi muốn shot này hơn dramatic" thì nghĩa là gì (more contrast? more atmosphere? more motion?). Tactical với góp ý, không defensive.
04Làm cách nào để trở thành Compositor phim?
Path 1: Film school — ĐH SK&ĐA chuyên VFX/Post. Path 2: Motion graphic background — tự học After Effects, sau lên Nuke. Path 3: VFX/CG school — Sparx Animation Academy, FPT Arena, Yoot Animation. Foundation 2–3 năm trong post-production.
Beginner thường bắt đầu After Effects (easier learning curve, AE community lớn, miễn phí học qua YouTube). 6–12 tháng AE intensive. Sau lên Nuke nếu muốn career feature film (1–2 năm intensive). Nuke Personal Learning Edition free for non-commercial.
Portfolio reel: 1–2 phút show shot integration. Đa dạng: sky replace, set extension, wire removal, CG integration, title design. Side-by-side before/after. Upload Vimeo (industry standard cho film). Show node graph (Nuke) hoặc layer breakdown (AE) cho technical demo trên ArtStation.
Apply tại: VN post-production house (Yeah1, BHD Post, ABC Post, Sound & Vision); production company in-house (Galaxy, CJ HK Entertainment, BHD); indie freelance cho production. Junior salary VN: 10–20 triệu/tháng; freelance project rate 5–30 triệu/project tùy size.
Sau 2–3 năm, specialize: TVC Compositor (turnover fast, fee per project, broad client) — AE primary. MV Compositor (creative space, music industry contact) — AE/Nuke mix. Feature Film Compositor (long project, cinema quality, prestigious) — Nuke priority, move sang VFX studio. Documentary Compositor — niche, restoration skill.
Compositor phim có path: (1) Senior Compositor → Compositing Supervisor → VFX Supervisor; (2) Freelance Compositor — work cho multiple project, day rate $300–800 USD; (3) Setup own VFX studio sau 10+ năm; (4) Move sang VFX studio quốc tế — Sparx*, Bad Clay, Augmenta là pathway.
