Matte Painter — reality bigger than reality
Matte Painter join sau Concept Design + Matchmove + Plate selection, trước final Compositing. Báo cáo Matte Painting Lead / VFX Supervisor. Phối hợp với Concept Artist (style reference), 3D Modeler (geometry to paint over), Lighting Artist (light match), Compositor (final integration). Quy trình: receive plate + concept + 3D rough → study reference → paint matte → camera projection setup → review → revise → handoff. Quota: 1-3 shot/tuần tùy complexity. Project: feature VFX film (1-2 năm với matte work 4-12 tháng).

2. Paint + photo bash + 3D combine
Build matte in Photoshop / Nuke / Mari. Techniques: (a) Painting from scratch với tablet (Cintiq, iPad); (b) Photo bashing — composite photo element + paint blend; (c) 3D bashing — quick 3D model + render + paint over; (d) Hybrid all three. Build in layer + element separate (sky, mountain, mid-ground, foreground) — for later parallax in camera projection.

3. Camera projection (2.5D setup)
For shot với camera move (most shot), pure 2D painting won't work — parallax mismatch. Camera projection: project painted matte onto 3D geometry (cards, simple mesh of mountain/building). Camera move → element move with proper parallax (closer foreground move more). Done in Nuke / Maya / Houdini. Multi-layer matte with cards at different depth.

4. Review + revise + handoff comp
Submit cho Matte Lead + VFX Supervisor. Review note: scale issue, lighting mismatch with plate, perspective wrong, mood off. Revise. After approval: handoff to Compositor with: painting layer (PSD), camera projection setup (Nuke script), color reference. Available for downstream question. Some Matte Painter own integration in comp themselves (combo role).
