Khi một fashion brand grow từ 100 pieces / season to 10,000 — không phải Designer "tạo nhiều hơn", mà ai đó translate concept Designer thành production reality tại factory. Đó là Garment Technologist.
Họ là cầu nối giữa Designer studio và factory floor — đảm bảo design có thể sản xuất, fit standard chuẩn xác, quality control nghiêm, cost tối ưu. Without Garment Technologist, brand không thể scale.
01Garment Technologist là ai?
Garment Technologist (Kỹ thuật viên may mặc) là chuyên gia technical translate fashion design thành production-ready garment. Garment Technologist — cầu nối Designer + factory
Garment Tech join quy trình sau Designer sketch + Pattern Maker first pattern. Báo cáo cho Head of Product / Production Director. Phối hợp với: Design team, Pattern Maker, Sample Atelier, Sourcing Team, Factory Production. Quy trình: design review → tech pack draft → first sample fitting → comment + iterate → pre-production sample → pilot run → bulk production → spot QC. Quy trình per garment 8–16 tuần. Season 100–500 SKU / brand — Tech team handle multiple parallel.
02Công việc của một Garment Technologist
1. Design review & feasibility
Receive Designer sketch + first pattern. Review: design có sản xuất được không? Construction phức tạp quá → cost cao + factory phải skill cao. Material chọn có available + reasonable cost không? Trim spec realistic? Identify potential issue early — push back tới Designer if needed, suggest alternative. Save brand thousand-dollar mistake.

2. Fit standard + size grading
Brand có fit philosophy — Zara fit khác Uniqlo fit khác Lululemon fit. Garment Tech maintain fit standard: base size (US 6 / EU 38 / Asian M) is anchor; grade rules (mỗi size lớn lên bao nhiêu ở each measurement — bust, waist, hip, length). Use fit model (live human có chuẩn body size) for fitting session. Or 3D body scan + virtual fit. Iterate 3–8 round fitting per garment.

3. Tech pack development
Garment Tech build tech pack — bible cho factory. Mỗi tech pack có: technical drawing (front + back + side, label all detail), measurement chart (POM = point of measure, with tolerance ±1cm), fabric specification (weight g/m², composition %, washing instruction), trim list (button supplier, zipper YKK, thread color), construction note (stitch type, seam allowance), logo placement, care label, packaging. 8–20 page per garment. Factory reference all production.

4. Sample lần lặp + factory QC
Factory produce first sample — Garment Tech review: measure chuẩn không, construction đúng spec không, fabric đúng spec không. Issue note tới factory: "tighten waist 1cm", "swap thread shade". Iterate 2–4 round before PP sample (Pre-Production) approval. Bulk production start — random QC spot check tại factory (visit VN, China, Bangladesh, India). Address issue: defect rate, color batch consistency, packing quality.

03Garment Technologist cần giỏi gì?
Pattern + construction sâu
Foundational. Hiểu pattern making (flat + draping), garment construction (each garment type — shirt, pant, dress, jacket — có standard construction). Hands-on sewing: ngồi máy may từ học sinh. Read: "Pattern Making for Fashion Design" (Helen Joseph-Armstrong), "Metric Pattern Cutting" (Winifred Aldrich).
Tech pack + spec writing
Tech pack = output Tech. Clarity, accuracy, completeness — non-negotiable. Công cụ: Adobe Illustrator (technical drawing), Excel / Google Sheets (measurement chart), Bamboo Rose, WFX, Centric PLM (industry PLM platform). Standardize template — reduce error + speed up.
Fabric + trim knowledge
Hundreds fabric: cotton (poplin, twill, jersey, oxford), silk (charmeuse, crepe, chiffon), wool (worsted, woolen, melton), tech fabric (nylon ripstop, polyester wicking, spandex blend). Behavior: drape, shrinkage, recovery, dye. Trim: button (size 14L 18L 22L, plastic/horn/metal), zipper (YKK Vislon, Excella, coil), interfacing (fusible, sew-in), thread (Coats & Clark, Gutermann).
Factory communication multi-language
Factory globally — VN, China, Bangladesh, India, Turkey, Vietnam. English + Chinese (Mandarin) + Vietnamese major asset. Travel: month at factory observe + train. Diplomacy when issue arise — factory relationship long-term partnership.
Detail + measurement precision
1mm matter. 100,000 unit × 1mm wrong = chest pocket misalign 100,000 garment. Detail-orientation obsessive. Documentation thorough. Reference always — never trust memory for spec.
Sustainable + cost-aware
Modern Tech consider: sustainability (eco fabric, BCI cotton, recycled polyester, low-water dye), cost engineering (where to save without quality compromise — alt material, reduce trim, simplify construction). Pattern certification: OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS, Bluesign.
04Làm cách nào để trở thành Garment Technologist?
Background phù hợp: Fashion Design, Garment Technology, Textile Engineering. VN: ĐH Bách Khoa HN/HCM (Dệt may), ĐH Sư phạm Kỹ thuật HCM (Công nghệ may), ĐH Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp (Thời trang). Quốc tế: LCF Pattern Cutting / Garment Technology, FIT NY, HKDI, Bunka Tokyo. Practical sewing class extensively.
Entry role: Assistant Garment Tech hoặc Sample QC tại brand (in-house) hoặc trading company (intermediate giữa brand + factory). VN có nhiều trading: Far Eastern Group, Crystal Group, Esquel, TAL Apparel; brand: Bench, Co. Vietnam, Vinatex. Tasks: measure sample, build basic tech pack section.
2–4 năm — promote. Own category: tops, bottoms, denim, outerwear, knitwear. Lead tech pack for ~30–60 SKU/season. Lead fitting session. Travel factory.
5–8 năm — manage team junior. Define brand fit standard, train new hire. Approve PP sample. Negotiate cost với factory.
8–15 năm — Director-level. Oversee multiple category tech team. Strategic decision: factory partnership, sustainability roadmap, fit standard evolution.
